In its simplest form, a periscope consistsof a tube with mirrors at each end. Lightbeams running at right angles to thetube are deflected into the tube by themirror at one end. At the other end thelight beams leave the tube offset parallelto the original direction of entry. A userlooking into the lower opening of aperiscope will have the feeling they areviewing the surroundings from a higherposition. The mirrors are positioned ata 45 angle to the entering and exitinglight beam, resulting in a rectangulardeflection. The upper part is pivoted andcan be rotated by 360 .
