Playground experience

Maggie Daley Park

Chicago / USA / 2014

Exciting game world set against the impressive Chicago skyline.

In the heart of Chicago, the eight-hectare Maggie Daley Park is a spacious leisure facility set against the city's impressive skyline. Since its completion at the end of 2014, the new park, which attracts families with young and older children and teenagers alike, has had an unmistakable presence. Even the entrance to the park is extraordinary: a bridge designed by Frank Gehry leads from Millennium Park over to Maggie Daley Park. Various climbing rocks and a huge ice skating rink can be seen from afar.
A particular crowd-puller is the approx. 13,000 m2 playground, which the company Richter Spielgeräte from Frasdorf helped to design and equip. The concept is bold, varied and surprising, both from an aesthetic and design point of view and from an educational perspective. In addition to various elements such as a play pyramid, lighthouse with slide, fishing boat with climbing nets and a harbour as well as nest cradles for the very little ones, the playground is particularly impressive with its two ten-metre-high square towers with a suspension bridge over 35 meters long and a variety of integrated play options. Here you can not only climb, balance and experience height, but young and old alike can also enjoy hiding, live out their childish imagination in role-playing games and experience a wide variety of physical phenomena on the rotating disks, the telescope or the rotating stone.

Pozuelo de Alarcon

Madrid / Spain / 2019

Exciting climbing playground for young and old.

The widely visible pyramid towers and climbing structures in the Pozuelo de Alarcon park in the Spanish metropolis of Madrid invite young and old to climb and explore.

Those who have already exhausted themselves climbing the heights of the towers can use the various niches to hide in or the many seating areas to chat or rest. In addition, a spacious sand playground offers plenty of opportunities for younger children to immerse themselves in imaginative role play.

The indoor playground based around the theme “up in the trees” invites children at IKEA in the French town of Bayonne to have fun climbing and exploring

The play structure, specially designed for the generous entrance area of the IKEA store in the French town of Bayonne, is a very special attraction.
The installation is based on the theme of “up in the trees” and composed of a total of eleven colourfully painted boxes, which are installed at different levels and fitted out with various window openings, net roofs and platform floors.
The access points are connected to one another by climbing nets, tunnels and ladder elements.

Special highlights are the skywalk, which consists of a net tunnel, and the 18-metre-long tunnel slide, which takes you back down from lofty heights.

Western Park Docklands

An exciting urban project

There is hardly a factor that influences the everyday life and development of children more than the spatial design of the living environment and the associated opportunities for “free play”. This is the central result of studies carried out by the Spielraum research group in various countries and cities. They show on a broad empirical basis the considerable importance of the quality of urban spaces for everyday life and the developmental opportunities of children. In collaboration with our Australian partner Marcus Constructions, we have created an attractive urban play space for children with the “Western Park Docklands” project in the metropolis of Melbourne that attracts young and old alike. The main focus is on the huge pyramid tower with a tunnel slide, which is visible from afar, brings an interesting aesthetic aspect to the urban environment and has an incomparably high play value.

Water and sand play world for young and old

A very special playground was opened in Osaka, Japan in 2019. BørneLund operates 90 toy stores and over 20 indoor play and exercise areas in Japan. So far there are very few creative wooden playgrounds in Japan. With this project, Richter and BørneLund are setting new trends for Japan. In the sand and water area, younger children in particular enjoy playing with the elements on the water inside, pumps and mud tables. The nest cradle invites you to relax and the small playhouses provide space for hiding and role-playing. The “Active Play” area appeals particularly to older children with its challenging towers, bridges, climbing nets and slides. In addition, there are exciting fields of experience for the senses with the dancing glockenspiel, a water whirlpool and a buzzing stone that even adults cannot escape.

Integrative space for natural and imaginative play

Martin's Park honors the youngest victim of the Boston Marathon bombings, Martin Richard. His family created this urban park as an inclusive space for natural and imaginative play. Richard's iconic wooden play ship is a landmark with two accessible levels that complement the waterfront setting. A wheelchair-accessible slide and animal-shaped petting stones, which particularly invite young children to role-play, complete the play offerings for all ages.

Climbing and playing in the shopping centre

The shopping centre "Mall of Arabia" in the Egyptian capital Cairo is not only impressive because of the choice of the many high-quality shops, but also because of the attractive children's playground, which the company Richter Spielgeräte has equipped with high-quality products made of mountain larch and stainless steel. At the centre of the playground are four pyramid towers of different heights with winding tunnel slides, visible from afar. The climbing structure invites especially older children and teenagers to discover, climb and balance and for the little ones two play houses offer space to retreat and for first role plays. A covered area with several wooden tables and benches is available for the breaks in the games, where you can sit down and relax at any time for a snack or a chat.

Enchanting natural playground

As part of the renovation of an existing playground, we worked closely with Timberplay England to create a natural playground that is exciting for young and old children as well as teenagers. Some existing play elements were integrated into the new design. A tower combination, a twin seesaw, bouncy plates, a dwarf hill and a spacious sand play area were added to the playground with its many mature trees.

First Richter climbing forest in the USA

The Richter Playground in the idyllic Mountain Lake Park in San Francisco attracts numerous visitors due to its location alone. In a spacious park area with a lake and lots of old trees, Richter Spielgeräte GmbH has designed numerous attractive play areas and equipped them with high-quality equipment. Several jumping boards arranged one behind the other, high swings and a large climbing forest - the first of its kind in the USA - encourage movement and action. A toddler area features animal-shaped petting stones and a long wooden caterpillar, which is equipped with additional exciting elements such as colorful "windows", a marble run and rotating discs. Younger children in particular can immerse themselves in role play here. And at the conferences, older children and adults can also learn exciting things about the reproduction of sound and sound over greater distances.

Ships in the middle of India's metropolis

There has been a spacious playground in the center of the Indian metropolis of Mumbai since 2018. The water play area with various gutter and damming elements as well as Archimedean screws invites young and old children to play with the elements. You can immerse yourself in role play on the billowing ship and the small sailing boat, you can sit, lie and chat on the various hammocks, and the combination of huts is ideal for climbing and hiding. However, the attractive focus of the play area is undoubtedly the two large ships with sand play areas in the bow. Here sailors, captains and pirates can let off steam to their hearts' content. Another highlight is the arched bridge, which is visible from afar and invites you to balance and connects the play areas. What is particularly exciting is that the playground was installed on a roof terrace on the 6th floor of a building. The project was therefore particularly technically complex and a challenge in terms of statics and ground anchoring.
