Donauinsel Vienna, Austria
An island for leisure and relaxation in the heart of Vienna
The construction of the Danube Island in Vienna was one point of the city's flood protection programme. While the upper and lower areas were laid out in a near-natural style, the middle section serves as a recreational park and offers bars and restaurants as well as event and play venues.
The small lake on the playground is fed by a wind-powered pump that stands on a hill. When the pump's windmill turns, the energy generated is used to pump water, which flows down the hill directly into the small pond, over which a rope bridge spans. At the foot of the hill there are other water playground equipment available. Here the children have fun pumping the water up with their own power or they build dams and watch how the water makes its way through the obstacles.
